The Humanistic Perspective Paper The humanistic approach takes an optimistic view of human nature, seeing people as essentially good. Believing in the more noble aspects of human existence, it insists on the value of qualities such as choice, free will and self definition. Humanistic psychologists believe that we are all unique individuals and that each person is shaped by their own personal experiences. This approach is also notable for being open to more philosophical influences, stating that we must define our lives for ourselves. Humanistic psychologists also believe that experiments on humans are inappropriate because everyone is unique. They believe that if people are treated like objects they may as well become like objects. Instead clients should be treated as whole human beings. Humanistics often object to calling those who participate in studies subjects, since this implies that they are merely powerless objects in a psychologists game. They prefer words like clients and participants, and they prefer to emphasise mutual cooperation and respect. One key idea related to the idea of the whole person is self actualisation. The idea of self actualisation focuses on human motivation. Maslow (1970, cited in Haralambos Rice et al 2002) developed a theory of human motivation. He believed that humans are motivated to satisfy a series of needs. The needs are hierarchical in the sense that lower level needs must be satisfied before the needs above can be motivated. The diagram below shows Maslows hierarchy of needs from the most basic needs to the highest level. Unconditional regard is the other key idea in the humanistic approach. One factor that helps us to achieve our potential is unconditional positive regard. Rogers (1951, cited in Haralambos Rice et al 2002) suggested that the therapist must not give advice or tell the clients what to do. The therapist instead, must create a supporting and accepting environment allowing the client to discover themselves and search for their own individual meanings. Unconditional positive regard must be shown by the therapist, being accepting and uncritical, sincere and genuine. This encourages the clients to become honest and accept themselves. By this route they will recognise and become their true selves. These ideas have encouraged many self help groups. Although the humanistic approach has many positive factors it also has weaknesses. The humanistic ideas are very vague and untestable. Some critics see the humanistic approach as a collection of recipes for living containing advice for getting the best out of life, rather than an approach which explains human behaviour. Also many self help therapy groups can be time consuming and are often only available to those who are willing to pay.

This could be because that individual is coloured, female or that the person doesnt fit in with anyone. One of the characters that are lonely in this novel is Characters such as crooks who are lonely because hes black (coloured). Crooks spend the vast majority of his time in the barn. The only way he can socialise with the other men is when theyre all playing horse shoes. Other times, hes not allowed in the bunk house. For example Lennie, candy and Crooks were talking in the barn house and Curleys wife came in and they all wanted her to go. Crooks stood his ground to her as they were all arguing. He said You got no rights comin in a coloured mans room. You got no rights messing around in here at all. Now you jus get out, an get out quick. If you dont, Im gonna ast the boss not to ever let you come in the barn no more. Curleys wife replied with Listen nigger, you know what I can do to you if you open your trap. The book then reads Crooks seemed to grow small, and he pressed himself against the wall. Yes, maam. What Curleys wife meant by saying what she could do to crooks is that all she has to say to Curley or anyone, is that Crooks has been coming on to her and harassing her. Once she has said that, Curley will be after Crooks and beat him. No one will want to listen to Crooks side of the story simply because hes black (coloured). Other characters in the novel such as Curleys wife are also lonely. John Steinback purposely didnt give Curleys wife a name because it shows that she was not treated as a normal human being. In the novel Candy has his dog that is simply known as Candys dog. This is shown of what Curleys wife means to everyone in the novel. All that she was to everyone was Curleys property or owner. An example is in chapter three was, Did you see that girl? You mean Curleys girl? Like crooks, Curleys wife does not have a say in anything. In the novel Lennie is another character who is also lonely. He is mentally ill, and has the mind of a child who is five years old. He imitates quite often what George is doing, just like a child would do to someone else for example, He pulled his hat down a little more over his eyes, the way Georges was. He also has the tendency to forget things that he has been told, and is quite often called a crazy bastard by George. For example, So you forgot awready, did you? I gotta tell you again, do I? Jesus Christ, youre a crazy bastard. Like Crooks, And Curleys wife, Lennie cant go out with the other men, such as when the whole group went into town Lennie had to stay behind with Crooks. He can not do this because he cant be trusted with meeting strangers, such as like what happened in Weed when he supposedly raped that little girl. What really happened was that he just wanted to feel the girls dress because he likes to feel soft and furry materials, and he panicked and the only thing he could do was to hold on until George had to sock him. Lennie also is Lonely because he does not have the choice to do what he wants, George has to give him instructions and tell him whats right and whats wrong. At the near beginning of the novel Lennie wanted to keep a dead mouse which he said he had found dead, however George told him to give the mouse over to him and Lennie, (who loves to pet mice and furry things) and Lennie handed the mouse over to George and obeyed him. Its only a mouse George A mouse? A live mouse? Uh-uh. Jus a dead mouse, George. I didnt kill it. Honest I found it. I found it dead. Give it here, said George. Aw, leave me have it, George. Give it here! Lennies closed hand slowly obeyed. Lennie is also a tall built man who isnt aware of his own strengths. He likes to pet mice but always kills them because he doesnt know his own strength. E. g. They was so little, he said apologetically. Id pet em, and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and they was dead. Lennie has also often been compared to animals in the novel. All these things about Lennie like being a bit dumb, being forgetful or just being childish are what I think make him so lonely in the novel. He is nothing like anyone else, he doesnt ever want to cause trouble but he does it all the time without knowing what hes getting himself into and because of that he can not socialise with many other people which I believe is resulting in his loneliness in the novel. Another character in the novel of mice and men who is lonely is Candy. Candy only has his dog to keep him company, and was very sad to see the dog go after he was shot due to his bad smell. Candy has only his dog and has always been devoted to it. When he was told to shoot the dog he looked at it for a while and replied. No, he said softly. No, I couldnt do that. I had Im too long. Not only does Candy require his dog for companionship but the dog needs Candy for basic survival, the dog obeys Candy. E. g. Come on boy. Come on, boy,he said gently. The old dog slowly and stiffly to his feet and followed the gently pulling leash. Even though the dog has been physically damaged, Candy still wants to stay with it and keep it. Ill put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with. Aint nothing left for him. Cant eat, cant see, cant even walk without hurtin. Candy even didnt except another little pup from slim because he loved that dog so much. So despite the dog being physically damaged and not being able to do anything, Candy needs the dog because its the only thing he has got and he loves it and has really gotten use to it. He was left feeling lonely after it was shot.

Mental Illness is a term used for a group of disorders causing severe disturbances in thinking, feeling and relating. They result in substantially diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life. (Mental Illness Defined) There are some different perspectives on the causes of mental illness. The perspectives include the biological, psychodynamic, humanistic and existential, behavioral, cognitive, and sociocultural. Advances in brain imaging techniques have helped scientists study the role of brain structure in mental illness. Some studies have shown brain abnormalities in certain mental illnesses. Some people with schizophrenia have enlarged brain ventricles. In addition, a variety of medical conditions may cause mental illness. Brain damage and strokes can cause loss of memory, impaired concentration and speech, and unusual changes in behavior. Brain tumors, imbalance of hormones, deficiencies in diet, and infections from viruses are other factors. Freud believes th at mental illness is caused by unconscious and unresolved conflicts in the mind. Both the humanistic and existential perspectives view abnormal behavior as resulting from a person’s failure to find meaning in life and fulfill his or her potential. The behavioral perspective explains mental illness, as well as all of human behavior, as a learned response to stimuli. Violence in video games lead to violent outbreaks and bad behaviour in real life, many people believe so. Are these violent video games moulding and fuelling today’s generation of young minds to a more violent side, forgetting the idea that these games are solely for entertainment purposes. Many studies have taken place surrounding this idea, giving valid points to both sides of the topic. Video games are extremely popular all over the world, connecting people through the internet allowing them to interact with one another through a cyber-portal for entertainment, with varying genres of games from card games, first person shooter’s, racing or even 3D strategy games. These games connect millions of people all around the world, gamers spending countless hours glued to screens looking at a bunch of pixels. These games are evolving every year, as technology gets better so do the games, with more realistic graphics, sound effects and scenarios. So with this, the violent game s are also becoming far more realistic, violent and aggressive. Are these prolonged hours spent playing these games damaging these people’s minds? Many of the violent war games being released today have age restrictions on them, R16 or R18 warning people of the violent content the game has, however this does not stop underage people getting their hands on them. In the article â€Å"Video games and youth violence: A prospective Analysis in Adolescents† written by Christopher J Ferguson, it quotes â€Å"The potential influence of violent video games on youth violence remains an issue of concern for psychologists† , stating that this topic is widely concerning to many people. Many studies have taken place to look into whether or not these games are causing bad behaviour, but in this article Christopher J Ferguson states that none of these studies have developed well validated measures of youth violence caused by the games. This article also points out that having depressive symptoms can lead to violent outbreaks due to antisocial traits with the individual, and gaming is an antisocial activity, therefore these games attract to those who  already have these depressive symptoms and the potential to act out violently. And the violent game has nothing to do with making the person violent, as these potential issues are there prior t o the individual even playing the game. There have been many studies based around violence in video games, whether it is elevated blood pressure, aggressive behaviour or violent outbreaks. A study led by Brock University PhD student Paul Adachi has proved that yes these violent games are causing aggressive behaviour, but this is based on how competitive the game is and not due to the violence. Therefore a non-violent game that is equally competitive will lead the user to show similar aggressive behaviour. In many cases, like the 1999 Columbine High school massacre where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 students, one teacher, and injuring 21 other students before turning the guns on themselves. It was well known that the two teenagers who committed this extreme violent act were excessive players of the violent video game called â€Å"Doom 3D†, in which the player embarks on defending mars from aliens with large automatic weapons. A lot of people claim that this game caused the two to violently outbreak into the massacre, however there is no proof, and once again, the game has not caused anyone else, out of its millions of players over the years to commit t he same heinous crime, Eric and Dylan were capable of these crimes before playing the game, it is however a possibility that the game helped their psychopathic views to be glorified. Where normal people do not have these psychopathic traits in the first place and play games like this for entertainment only. Children failing in school can become violent or show aggressive behaviour due to the low academic marks and failing to achieve, and many studies state that video games cause children to fail school, thus leading to violent aggressive behaviour. This is falsely accusing video games based upon facts that can be associated with various other activities. Spending six hours a day watching TV, shopping, or sleeping will just as equally affect your school grades, it is down to the individual how they use their time effectively. In the article â€Å"Violent video games do not cause aggression† written by Lester Haines, it states that the university of Illinois carried out studies regarding the possible link between violent video games and real world aggression, concluding their findings from their first long term study to show that the violent games â€Å"did not cause any substantial increase in said aggression†. Violent video  games bring millions of people around the world entertainment, and social interaction through the internet connecting them with other gamers, who have similar interests. Allowing interaction through talking and playing the game, there are many people who believe that these violent video games are causing many people to act out violently, recreating what they see or play in these games. Blaming these games for people’s actions is obscured. If someone is capable of committing extreme violent acts, or acting in an aggressive manor, they were capable of it well before they took part in playing a computer game. It is down to the individual who plays these games to act responsible, know right from wrong, and play the games for entertainment only.
